Dental implantation is one of the most relevant dental services. According to statistics, more than 70% of people do not have one or two teeth. Moreover, the older the person, the more acute the question of treatment becomes.
The absence of a tooth in its proper place entails not only digestive problems and aesthetic defects, but also psychological complexes. The installation of dental implants occupies a leading position, ahead of other types of prosthetics in terms of efficiency, reliability and aesthetic indicators. We will tell you what types of implants are, how to choose the perfect option for yourself and what are the advantages of implantation.
Despite the fact that dental implantation in Ukraine is a fairly common and time-tested procedure, there are many myths about it. What is true and what is fiction? Most often, people are concerned about how painful the installation procedure is, how likely it is to engraft, how much the surgery costs, and what the result will be for that money. We will answer these and some other questions in order.
Dental implants include:
The benefits of this procedure more than offset all the possible disadvantages, the most significant of which is the cost of the service. An inexpensive implant is unlikely to work, especially if the implant requires more than two teeth.
In fact, the implant is an artificial root of the tooth, which is made of durable and biocompatible metal alloys (most commonly titanium). After a competent operation in dentistry, a person does not feel the difference in the use of ordinary teeth and permanent dentures. All tooth functions must be restored.
The implant consists of a crown, the body of the implant implanted into the bone, and an abutment that connects the two main parts of the structure.
Implants may be different:
In our clinic, there is a wide line of manufacturers and types of implants (MegaGen, Straumann), among which it is possible to choose the ideal option for each patient, based on his clinical case and the budget allocated for treatment.
Implants are also classified by the method of installation.
When choosing an implant, the clinical picture, quantity, and quality of bone tissue, as well as the patient’s financial capacity are taken into account. High-cost implants are usually more effective and have a longer manufacturer’s warranty. The size of the implant is selected based on the results of computed tomography. Then it is necessary to order and buy the selected sample from the manufacturer.
Before placing the implant, you must:
The presence of contraindications should also be ruled out before proceeding. It is about diabetes, oncology and infectious diseases (HIV, hepatitis, syphilis).
Depending on the clinical picture, choose not only the type of implant but also the method of treatment.
Thus, the one-step method involves the removal of a tooth with the implant in one day or the installation of a prosthesis and the simultaneous conduct of bone plastic. This technique is advantageous for a short treatment period and in some cases a more aesthetic result.
The delayed implantation involves several steps. Initially – tooth extraction, and after a few months – the installation of the implant, or the implementation of bone plastic and implantation after 6-9 months. This method is considered safer.
The methodology is chosen by the doctor and the patient together, taking into account all the features of the clinical case. For example, in some situations before installation, it is necessary to increase bone tissue, in others – not. A young patient with sufficient bone volume and a lost, non-recoverable tooth are shown in most cases a one-step implantation method. But for age-old patients who have long been missing teeth and have had prolonged use of removable dentures, it is likely that the delayed implant placement will be a priority.
The procedure is performed under strong local anesthesia, so there should be no pain during surgery. Only the mechanical work of the doctor in the oral cavity can be felt. With a delayed procedure the implant is screwed into the bone tissue, and after 3-6 months a permanent crown is placed on the abutment. In most cases, the temporary crown is placed immediately on the day of implantation. Depending on the implant system selected, the probability of engraftment is 97-99%.
The presence of edema after surgery and its increase within three days is the norm. After 7-10 days, the swelling should completely go away. If in the meantime, the swelling not only does not go away, but you see that the situation is getting worse – this is a serious reason for urgent medical attention.
For implants to last you as long as possible, you must follow the rules of hygiene – brush your teeth twice a day, use irrigators and dental floss, pay special attention to clearing the area between the crown and gums. Occupational dental brushing and compulsory monitoring of the implant with x-rays are recommended twice a year (examination every 6 months). Remember, even the most expensive and high-quality implant systems will NOT last long without proper care.
Specialist consultation is required to determine the exact price of the service. The cost directly depends on the type of implant system, the method of surgery, the need for bone plastic, the cost of selected dentures, additional procedures (eg, sinus lift).
