Modern dentistry is able to restore the beauty of a smile even in case of complete tooth loss. This is thanks to the placement of dental implants, artificial structures that are placed directly into the jawbone. However, if a lot of time has passed since the loss of a tooth, the bone tissue becomes thinner and insufficient for implant placement. Dentists at Bilobrov Clinic in Kyiv have a solution – performing a sinus lift. This is a surgical operation that allows you to increase the volume of bone tissue in the upper teeth. After the operation, the possibility of implantation opens up, and therefore – for the complete restoration of aesthetics and dental function. At Bilobrov Clinic, the sinus lift procedure is performed by dental surgeons of the highest category. With us, bone augmentation will be easy, effective, and painless. A precise surgical intervention in the upper jaw area is performed through an incision in the soft tissues and a drilled hole in the bone leading to the bottom of the maxillary sinus. Due to its complexity, sinus lift surgery is performed only by experienced surgeons. And only after a thorough diagnosis.

Types of sinus lift for dental implants

In dentistry, there are 2 main types of sinus lift: closed and open. The method of surgery is chosen by the doctor according to the individual clinical picture. For preliminary diagnostics, the patient is necessarily prescribed an X-ray, computed tomography and other examination methods. Let’s talk in more detail about the difference between open and closed sinus lift:

  • Open sinus lift — preliminary tissue augmentation. It is performed if the patient’s bone height is up to 7 mm. Often – after 10 months (this period is individual).
  • Closed sinus lift – is recommended if the bone height is 8 mm or more. Tissue augmentation occurs simultaneously with implant placement, so you will have a shorter rehabilitation period.

Note that the sinus lift procedure is performed only on the upper jaw. For the lower jaw, there are other restoration methods that will be recommended by your dentist after a thorough diagnosis.

How the sinus lift operation is performed: the procedure is performed in stages

In order to better understand what a sinus lift (osteoplasty) is, let’s look at a typical closed-type surgery:

  1. Using a special tool, the doctor forms a small hole behind the drill – access to the sinus membrane.
  2. An instrument is inserted into the hole, with the help of which the bottom of the maxillary sinus is gently shifted upward.
  3. The cavity is filled with osteoplastic material to the height required for implantation.
  4. An implant with a crown is implanted into the jaw through the same hole.

After the procedure, the doctor prescribes additional treatment: antibiotic therapy. A date for a second follow-up visit to the clinic is also set to assess healing.

Note that open sinus lift surgery is more complicated. It is performed if the patient’s bone thickness is less than 7 mm. At least 6-10 months should elapse between the period of open sinus lift and implantation. It is very important to follow all the rules of rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation period after sinus lift: recommendations

Proper care after surgery is very important for a successful outcome and avoidance of complications. So let’s look at what you shouldn’t do after surgery and what you should do on the contrary. The basic rules are as follows:

  1. Restrictions on physical activity. During the first week after the procedure, avoid intense physical activity: running, going to the gym, etc. In some cases, a longer period of physical activity may be recommended.
  2. Diet. After the procedure, try to eat soft foods, avoiding hot and cold. This prevents irritation at the surgical site.
  3. Oral hygiene. Brush your teeth very carefully, avoiding the area of surgery. Your doctor may recommend an antiseptic rinse.
  4. Medicines. These are usually antibiotics to prevent infection and anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce pain.
  5. Do not smoke. Smoking slows down the healing process and increases the risk of complications.
  6. Reducing edema. This will help to reduce it. Prefer dry cold.
  7. Visiting a doctor. Do not miss postoperative visits to the dentist so that he can monitor the healing process.
  8. Symptoms that require attention. If you experience severe pain, unusual bleeding, or other symptoms that seem worrisome, contact your doctor immediately.

Remember that each case is individual, so always monitor your feelings and follow your doctor’s recommendations.
