Types of gum surgery

The main indications for gum plastic surgery are exposure of the tooth root, violation of the natural aesthetics of a smile, “shark’s smile” (gum layering), and the need to correct the gums during dental implantation. Dentistry distinguishes the following types of this procedure:

  • Gingivectomy is a procedure that involves the removal of pathologically altered gingival tissue in periodontal pockets with the formation of the gum contour;
  • Vestibuloplasty is a change in the depth of the vestibule, the area where the gums transition to the cheek. The procedure is performed in case of gingival tissue atrophy with displacement or transplantation of the mucosa;
  • Excision of the hood;
  • Cutting the frenulum of the tongue, upper lip.

Gum surgery is performed only after a thorough diagnosis. The procedure is performed by a surgeon of the highest category.

How gum surgery is performed: stages of the operation

For a clear understanding of what gingivoplasty is, let’s talk about the stages of this procedure:

  • Examination of the gums and oral cavity, drawing up an individual treatment plan. At this stage, the doctor takes anamnesis, conducts a thorough diagnosis of the oral cavity, and prescribes additional examinations. After receiving the results, the dentist draws up an individual treatment plan and provides you with complete information on preparing for the operation and tells you about the restrictions that await you afterwards.
  • Sanitation of the oral cavity. At the stage of preparation for the operation, the dentist performs professional oral hygiene to remove dental plaque, treats caries and inflammatory processes, and performs curettage – cleaning periodontal pockets.
  • Introduction of anesthesia. Local anesthesia is most often used as a method of anesthesia.
  • Directly performing the operation. Depending on the method of plastic surgery, a flap incision and gum relocation or transplantation of donor gum tissue. Donor tissues for transplantation are taken from the area of the upper jaw tubercle, rarely from the palate.
  • Suturing.
  • Drug therapy aimed at speedy healing. The dentist prescribes antibiotics, wound healing medications and/or therapeutic applications.

You will also be scheduled for a follow-up visit to the clinic to monitor healing. If you experience any unusual symptoms after the surgery – severe pain, discomfort, fever – contact your dentist immediately.

Provided that the operation is performed correctly and the dentist’s recommendations are followed, complications after gum surgery are extremely rare. Therefore, you should not worry about it.

Rehabilitation and care after gum surgery

After such an operation, proper care and adherence to the doctor’s recommendations are very important, as this guarantees quick healing and no complications. The basic rules are as follows:

  1. Restrictions on physical activity. During the first days after surgery, you should avoid intense physical activity. Do not go to the gym, and avoid temperature exposure.
  2. Diet. Avoid hot food and drinks. It is best to eat soft, cool foods to avoid irritating the intervention area.
  3. Oral hygiene. In the first days after surgery, you should avoid active brushing of the teeth in the area of intervention. Instead of brushing your teeth, it is recommended to use an antiseptic mouthwash.
  4. Medicines. Your doctor usually prescribes anti-inflammatory and antibiotic medications to prevent infectious complications. It is important to take all prescribed medications as recommended.
  5. Reduction of edema. If you have swelling in the intervention area, a cold compress can help reduce it.
  6. Avoid alcohol. Alcohol can cause increased bleeding and slow down the healing process.
  7. Do not touch the operating area. Try not to touch the intervention site with your tongue.
  8. Visiting a doctor. Make sure that you keep all your post-operative appointments with your dentist so that he or she can monitor the healing process.
  9. Reduce the number of cigarettes if you smoke. Smoking slows down the healing process and can cause complications.

Remember that each case is individual. Always monitor your own feelings and do not hesitate to ask your doctor for help with any questions. Then recovery will be easy and trouble-free.
