Treatment of periodontitis

Periodontitis is an inflammation of the tooth’s root envelope and adjacent tissues. The disease is dangerous because without proper treatment it leads to tooth loosening and loss. The inflammatory process affects the ligaments that hold the tooth in place. Periodontitis occurs as a result of untreated caries or pulpitis, due to incorrectly installed bridges, crowns or fillings. At the first signs of the disease, you should visit a dentist. At Bilobrov Clinic dentistry, we know everything about the treatment of periodontitis and will help you save your tooth even if the disease has become chronic.

Types and symptoms of periodontitis

There are two stages of the disease: acute and chronic. Acute periodontitis has the following symptoms:

  • Sharp pain in the tooth, which can be aggravated by eating or even by light pressure on the tooth.
  • Swelling of the gums. The soft tissues surrounding the diseased tooth become swollen and painful.
  • Sensitivity to temperature changes. The tooth can react to hot or cold sensitively.
  • Bad breath.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to see your dentist as soon as possible for an examination and treatment. Untimely treatment of periodontitis can lead to further complications, including tooth loss and the spread of infection to other tissues.

This is important: the symptoms of chronic periodontitis are less pronounced. When the disease becomes chronic, the acute pain disappears, and only discomfort remains, which can disturb the patient extremely rarely. However, periodontitis continues to progress and can lead to a number of complications.

Why does tooth root inflammation occur?

The main cause of the inflammatory process is advanced, untreated caries or pulpitis. Bacteria that have infected the tooth reach the periodontal tissues. The infection develops rapidly and leads to damage to the tissues around the tooth. Periodontitis can also be caused by injuries to the tooth root, both serious and systematic microtrauma.

Improper endodontic treatment is another cause of periodontitis. Inflammation occurs as a result of a chemical burn during root canal treatment, incomplete removal of the infection focus, and allergies to the drugs used for treatment.

Other causes of inflammation of the apex of the tooth root:

  • damage to the walls of the root canal;
  • root canal obstruction;
  • granulomas, cysts that affect the tooth root;
  • damage to the root when removing the post.

At the first sign of the disease, you should visit a dental clinic for examination, diagnosis and treatment of a diseased tooth. You should not wait six months for the pain to increase. With periodontitis, it is important to act quickly to avoid complications, one of which is tooth loss.

Treatment of periodontitis in dentistry Bilobrov Clinic

Treatment of acute periodontitis, as well as the chronic form of the disease, requires a comprehensive approach. Immediately after the patient’s visit, we work according to a clear plan:

  1. Diagnostics of teeth. Before starting treatment, we take a targeted X-ray, conduct a thorough examination of the oral cavity. We determine whether the tooth has been endodontically treated before. At this stage, we determine the condition of the tooth root and the number of available canals. Usually, such an image shows the shape of a liquefaction focus in the periapical tissues. It is important that the patient may not experience acute pain at the time of the visit, only a feeling of discomfort when eating solid food.
  2. Cleaning and disinfection of the tooth canals. The dentist cleans and disinfects the tooth canals from bacteria and other infectious materials. At this stage, we use the most modern equipment that allows us to perform the most accurate work when intervening in the tooth and outside it. These are manual and machine files, the use of hot gutta-percha (filling).
  3. Repeated X-ray. After endodontic treatment, we take a final X-ray that records the installed temporary filling.
  4. Permanent filling. In two weeks, we perform a permanent restoration of the affected areas of the tooth. The treatment protocol remains in the database, which allows you to have a complete picture of the previously performed work during the second intervention.

Here are four clear steps that ultimately make it impossible for patients to face pain and give the world another healthy smile.

Complications of periodontitis

Periodontitis develops rapidly and can lead to a variety of complications, especially if the patient does not receive timely and adequate treatment. Some of the most common complications are:

  • Abscess. This is a formation of pus in the gums that can be very painful and lead to significant swelling and discomfort.
  • Tooth loss. Periodontitis can lead to the destruction of the tissues surrounding the tooth and ultimately lead to its loss.
  • Destruction of bone tissue. In severe cases, periodontitis can lead to bone loss, which can affect the structure and support of neighboring teeth.
  • Spread of infection. The infection that results from periodontitis can spread to neighboring tissues and organs, causing serious medical problems.
  • Deterioration in overall health. Scientific studies have shown a link between gum disease and poor overall health, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Periodontitis: prevention of the disease

Prevention of periodontitis is a series of simple measures that help maintain healthy gums and teeth. To avoid inflammation, it is important to:

  • Regular oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice daily, using a medium-hard toothbrush and floss/flossers to clean the interdental spaces.
  • Visit the dentist. Get regular checkups and dental cleanings from your dentist to detect and treat any gum and tooth problems in time. After all, many dental diseases are asymptomatic. The frequency of visits to the clinic is at least once every 6 months.
  • A healthy lifestyle. Follow the basic rules here: eat a balanced diet, limit your sugar intake.
  • Avoid smoking. This bad habit can worsen the condition of the gums and increase the risk of developing periodontitis.
  • Avoid traumatic situations that can lead to damage to your teeth and gums.
