Root canal treatment is a procedure that is necessary in case of advanced caries, when the inflammation has reached the pulp. The therapy involves cleaning the dental canals to eliminate the infection, filling the canals with elastic materials (gutta-percha), and directly restoring the crown part of the tooth with a filling or crown.

At Bilobrov Clinic, we are confident that the key to high-quality root canal filling is careful diagnosis and control. Before starting treatment, we take an X-ray to visualize the tooth canals, determine their number and shape. We perform precise treatment under a microscope. And after the procedure is completed, we take a second picture to control the result.

When tooth canals need to be treated

Root canal filling is necessary in cases where the inflammation has reached the pulp. The tooth pulp is the living part of the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. If appropriate measures are not taken, the infection can spread, causing pain. Over time, serious complications are possible – abscess, tooth cyst. As a result, the tooth must be removed. That is why you should visit a dental clinic for root canal treatment in the following cases

  • Deep caries. When caries reaches the pulp, bacteria can infect the pulp, causing inflammation and necrosis.
  • Tooth injury. Similar to caries, trauma can lead to pulp damage. For example, a cracked or fractured tooth can open the way for bacteria to enter the pulp.
  • Periodontitis, which occurs with complications.
  • Preparation for dental prosthetics also involves filling the root canal.

Signs of pulp inflammation include acute pain when chewing, prolonged sensitivity of the tooth to hot or cold, swelling or soreness of the gums around the tooth, and darkening of the tooth. If you notice these symptoms, you should immediately seek root canal treatment.

Diagnostics before root canal filling

Before proceeding with the root canal filling procedure, the dentist performs a number of diagnostic measures to determine the condition of the tooth and the need for such an intervention. The dentist thoroughly examines the patient’s oral cavity, checking the condition of the teeth, gums, and surrounding tissues. He or she may also test the tooth’s sensitivity to cold or heat, as well as to pressure. After that, an X-ray of the tooth is taken. X-ray examination helps to determine the depth of damage, the shape of the root canals, the presence of any infections in the root zone and other abnormalities. In some cases, 3D X-ray scanning can be used to obtain a detailed image of the tooth structure and root canals.

Stages of treatment and filling of tooth canals

Root canal treatment is one of the most common dental procedures. The therapy involves the removal of affected or dead tooth pulp, cleaning, shaping and disinfecting the internal space of the tooth (canal) and its subsequent filling.

Root canal filling is a highly effective dental procedure aimed at preserving a tooth that could be lost due to deep carious lesions, damage or infection of the pulp.

Let’s take a closer look at the process:

  • Cleaning of the tooth canal. The affected pulp is removed with specially shaped instruments. After that, the tooth canal and root cavity are thoroughly cleaned of pulp residues and bacteria.
  • Disinfection. To avoid the development of infection and prevent its spread, the canal is disinfected with special antiseptic solutions.
  • Canal formation. Using specialized instruments, the canal is shaped into the desired shape for further filling.
  • Root canal filling with gutta-percha. This stage involves filling the prepared canal with a special material (gutta-percha) to prevent bacteria from entering and restore the tooth structure. The filling protects the tooth from new infections and helps maintain its integrity.

After root canal treatment, the tooth needs to be restored with a crown or other prosthesis. This helps to restore the functionality and aesthetic appearance of the tooth.

Recommendations after canal filling

In the first days after the procedure, you may experience slight pain and tooth sensitivity. This is a normal phenomenon that will go away on its own. However, if you experience significant discomfort, your dentist may recommend painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs. Also, we recommend avoiding heavy load on the tooth for 1-2 days after filling. If a temporary filling has been placed, make sure that no food debris gets under it.

In addition, you should follow all the standard rules of oral care. After root canal treatment, replace your toothbrush with a new one, and use the toothpaste and mouthwash recommended by your dentist.
