A consultation and examination by an orthodontist is the first step towards the smile of your dreams. During the first visit, the doctor will examine your posture – the position of your body in space, as well as your face, oral cavity, breathing, swallowing, chewing, and speech functions. This will help determine whether the existing problem requires orthodontic treatment or not.

The orthodontist will offer you additional diagnostic methods necessary for a more detailed analysis. This is necessary to choose the correct treatment strategy and the most effective method of solving your problem.

How does an orthodontist consultation go?

The main purpose of an orthodontic consultation is not only a general diagnosis, but also the collection of information about the patient’s health status and the appointment of additional examination methods. To assess the level of seriousness of the problem and develop a treatment plan, the orthodontist checks:

  • symmetry, evenness of the dentition;
  • development of all tissues of the oral cavity;
  • patient’s posture;
  • operation of the chewing apparatus.

After a visual examination, you will need to undergo a number of examinations: a panoramic dental X-ray, computed tomography (CT), and an X-ray of the temporomandibular joint. Based on these examinations, you will be recommended a treatment method.

An orthodontic consultation is not just a meeting with a doctor. It is the first step on the way to a beautiful and healthy smile. Do not delay a visit to a specialist if you notice problems with your bite!

Frequently asked questions about an orthodontic consultation

When do I need to consult an orthodontist?

It is necessary to consult an orthodontist if you are concerned about malocclusion and unevenness of the dentition. Often, an orthodontist consultation can be recommended by a general dentist.

How to make an appointment with an orthodontist in Kyiv?

To make an appointment, give us a call or leave your contacts in the contact form. We will help you choose a convenient date and time for your visit.

How to prepare for an orthodontic consultation?

Prepare complete information about the problem you are concerned about. Also, if possible, bring the results of your previous research. You won't need to be more thorough than that.

How does an orthodontist advise a dentist?

During the consultation, the orthodontist conducts a general examination, takes anamnesis (asks you a number of questions). After that, a photographic protocol is performed to record the condition of the patient's teeth and gums. A CT scan and/or a panoramic image of the jaw is also prescribed for a comprehensive assessment of the condition of the teeth and gums.

Why do you need a second consultation with an orthodontist?

At the second consultation, the orthodontist informs you about the results of the research, tells you about the possible solutions to the problem in your case and suggests a treatment plan. The treatment plan must be agreed with you.

Orthodontic consultation: more about diagnostics

Your orthodontist will refer you for additional examinations – a panoramic dental X-ray, a teleroentgenogram, a computed tomography scan. Let us tell you in more detail why these examinations are necessary in orthodontics and how they are performed.

A panoramic image, or orthopantomogram (OPTG), helps to determine the exact number of teeth, the location of the roots, and the presence of retained molars. In addition, as a result of OPTG, caries and pathological processes in the oral cavity can be detected.

Teleroentgenogram, or TRG, is an X-ray of the skull in the lateral projection. The examination helps to find the cause of the disorder, assess the position of the jaws relative to each other and determine the exact location of the teeth. During the TRG, the angle of the teeth and the degree of their displacement are assessed. These data are necessary for a number of calculations required to draw up an effective treatment plan.

An equally important examination is computed tomography (CT). The purpose of the diagnosis is to assess the strength of the dentition, its ability to withstand the load from the bracket system, and to predict its growth.

Orthodontic treatment is prescribed by a specialist only based on the results of the diagnosis. The orthodontist carefully analyzes the data obtained and draws up a treatment plan for you that will help you get the desired result.

Methods of treatment in orthodontics

Depending on the clinical picture, an orthodontist can recommend various treatment methods: both purely orthodontic and surgical.

Orthodontic methods of correcting malocclusion include the installation of removable or fixed systems, braces and aligners. The installation of braces helps to effectively correct the position of the teeth, the position of the molars and gradually align the patient’s bite. The duration of wearing braces is 1.5-2 years. It depends on the individual clinical picture and the patient’s age (treatment is more effective in adolescents than in adults).

Surgical methods of therapy are prescribed less frequently if bite correction with braces/aligners alone is ineffective. Surgery in orthodontics involves tooth extraction, microimplant placement, periodontal procedures (plastic surgery of the tongue frenulum and lips). In some cases, surgical and orthodontic methods are combined to achieve the best result.
