Bone grafting, or osteoplasty, is the restoration of the jaw using bone material. The main indication for the procedure is insufficient bone tissue before dental implantation. After all, the larger and denser the jawbone, the better the implants will take root. We can determine the optimal type of bone tissue for you with the help of diagnostics – a computed tomography scan.

Thanks to jawbone grafting, you get the opportunity to restore the beauty of your smile after diseases and injuries – efficiently, efficiently, painlessly.

How is bone grafting performed?

To build up the jawbone, dentists use donor bone tissue from neighboring areas of the jaw: the upper and lower jaw. Bone grafting can also be performed using synthetic materials that are similar in composition to human bone. Such materials are highly compatible and ensure the stability of the implants. In order for the bone tissue to take root, the affected area is covered with a mucous membrane.

Bone grafting in dentistry is performed in several stages:

  • Preparation – oral cavity sanitation and antibiotics. If necessary, replacement therapy.
  • Anesthesia. Local anesthesia is usually used for pain relief. Less commonly, treatment is performed in a medication sleep.
  • Direct placement of bone tissue. The dental surgeon makes an incision in the gum and periosteum, splits the alveolar ridge, places the bone tissue in the cavity and fixes it with mini-screws.
  • Suturing. After the operation, the dentist covers the area with a barrier membrane and sews the gum.

Then you receive recommendations for postoperative care. This includes taking antibiotics and painkillers. Additionally, the dentist sets a date for a control examination and suture removal.

Selection of material for bone grafting

The material for bone grafting is selected and offered to the patient by the doctor. The following bone graft options are available:

  • Autografting. The material is taken directly from the patient’s body. Thanks to this, it is perfectly compatible and perfectly heals. The disadvantage of this option is the need for a second surgery and the painfulness of the procedure. With this technique, the bone is taken directly from the patient’s body.
  • Xenograft. Bone material obtained from the bones of animals (usually cows). Proper processing of the material for sterility and biocompatibility is very important. The operation is performed only once, and the rehabilitation period is relatively short.
  • Alloplastic implants. Synthesized from artificial materials: gypsum, glass, biocoral, etc. They can be of different shapes and sizes.
  • Combined implants. They consist of a combination of natural bone and artificially synthesized materials. At the same time, they are well implanted.

The choice of bone material is always made individually, after a thorough diagnosis. The patient’s budget is also taken into account, as the price of different types of material differs significantly.

Types and features of bone grafting

Bone grafting is an operation that can be performed in different ways. These are:

  • Open or closed sinus lift. As a result of the procedure, the mucous membrane of the maxillary sinus floor is displaced. It is necessary if the patient does not have enough of his own bone tissue for implantation. The bone cavity is filled with artificial material.
  • Targeted tissue regeneration to increase the width and/or height of the bone ridge. This is a minimally traumatic method that involves bone grafting and the placement of a barrier insulating membrane. Implantation can be performed at the same time.
  • Increasing the width of the bone. To perform this procedure, the alveolar ridge is split: the alveolar ridge is sawn into two parts. The process of filling the internal cavity with bone material occurs naturally. The placement of a dental implant is possible simultaneously with the ridge expansion. This way, bone growth will be the fastest and most rapid.
  • Bone block transplantation. Tissues for this purpose are taken directly from the patient: from the chin or hind jaw. The dentist fixes the bone block with microscrews. Next, a barrier biocompatible membrane is installed. Healing after such an intervention takes up to 8 months; simultaneous implant placement is not possible.

After bone augmentation in dentistry, the patient is prescribed antibiotics. The duration of antibiotic therapy is individual, but it is very important to take the medication according to the schedule. In addition, during the rehabilitation period, you should avoid activities that increase body temperature and blood pressure. These include sports, air travel, loud sneezing and coughing. Your doctor will provide you with more detailed recommendations.
