The most common cause of toothache and visits to the dentist is caries. This is the name given to the process of destruction of the enamel and hard tissues of the tooth, which progresses and spreads deeper without treatment. Let’s find out what causes caries, what complications may occur, and most importantly, what methods of treating this disease exist.

There are many bacteria in the human mouth – within a few hours after eating and thorough brushing, the number of different microorganisms in the oral cavity can reach a million! It is these microbes that actively adhere to the surface of the teeth that are the main cause of caries. The ultimate goal of every person who cares about their health is to minimize the factors that contribute to the growth of bacteria. This goal can be achieved by following simple but effective recommendations:

  • Brush your teeth thoroughly twice a day, using a clean toothbrush, floss and rinse;
  • include more hard raw vegetables in your diet and reduce the amount of carbohydrates;
  • monitor the availability of essential vitamins and minerals in your diet (especially fluoride, phosphorus and calcium);
  • improve overall immunity by leading a healthy lifestyle;
  • change your toothbrush on time.

If, despite all your efforts, tooth decay has already appeared and is causing you discomfort, you need to see a doctor. The sooner you come to the dentist, the easier, inexpensive and painless your “tooth repair” will be. You should not delay your visit and be afraid of pain. Today, anesthesia in dentistry has reached a high level of development, which makes caries treatment at any stage absolutely painless.

Cement fillings are practically not used at the moment because they shrink quickly and often provoke secondary caries. The only advantage of such a filling is its low price. However, it should be understood that a cement filling is fragile and unreliable, and it will have to be replaced frequently.

Indications and contraindications

Even if you don’t feel any pain, but notice a discoloration of the enamel or any darkening on the tooth surface, this is a direct indication for treatment by a dentist. Don’t be afraid to seem incredulous or strange when you come to the doctor with only visual signs of illness. Visual indications also include enamel chips and visible dark gaps located along the edge of the filling (a sign of secondary caries).
By visiting a doctor in the early stages, when the changes are not yet painful, the patient significantly reduces the time and cost of caries treatment.
Tactile indications include a painful reaction to eating hot, cold, sweet or salty foods, as well as pain of varying degrees.

It is important to note that there are contraindications for caries treatment, namely:

  • first and third trimesters of pregnancy;
  • acute respiratory diseases, herpes in the acute stage;
  • acute stage of periodontal disease, accompanied by severe gum bleeding.

Frequently asked questions about dental treatment

Myths and truth

Does root canal treatment under a microscope hurt?

No, because all procedures are performed under local anesthesia. Slight sensitivity is possible in the first days after the procedure, but to avoid severe discomfort, the dentist may recommend the use of painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Why is treatment under a microscope considered more effective?

The microscope ensures high accuracy of diagnostics, detection and treatment of root canals, which allows for maximum preservation of healthy tissue and guarantees high-quality canal sealing.

How long does dental treatment under a microscope last?

It depends on the complexity of the disease. On average, a patient spends 1 hour in the dentist's chair.

Stages of development and methods of caries treatment

To choose the right treatment method, first of all, it is necessary to conduct a thorough diagnosis. For example, the degree of tooth decay can be initial, moderate, and deep. In the first case, small darkening, roughness and foci of tooth enamel demineralization are observed on the tooth surface. In other words, there is only a small spot on the enamel that does not penetrate to the dental tissue.

At the middle stage, caries affects the dentin layer under the enamel, creating cavities. As for deep caries, it means the spread of infection deeper than the dentin layer – at this stage, complications often occur.

If the caries is at an early stage and the tooth tissue is not yet affected, you can do without filling and boron, using the ICON infiltration technology for treatment. During the procedure, the patient is applied to the teeth with a special drug that destroys the carious area. Next, a resin is applied to the surface to imitate tooth enamel.

With an average degree of tooth damage, a filling is indicated. This process includes:

  1. cleaning enamel from dental plaque;
  2. local anesthesia;
  3. drilling of damaged enamel and carious tissues;
  4. isolation of the tooth from saliva and drug treatment;
  5. filling – gel treatment, step-by-step application of materials and modeling taking into account the bite and shape of the teeth;
  6. polishing the surface of the seal.

After polishing, the patient should not feel any discomfort when closing their teeth. If you feel that there is excess material left on the edges of the treated tooth, inform your doctor and the specialist will solve the problem in a few seconds.

When caries reaches the level of the pulp and dental nerve, a single filling is no longer enough and it is quite possible that root canal treatment will be required. To draw up a treatment plan in this case, an examination and consultation with a specialist is necessary.

Types of fillings

Cement, plastic, ceramic, glass-fiber, metal, and photopolymer fillings are distinguished by the appearance and properties of the materials used to make them. The most common are cement and photopolymer samples.

Cement fillings are practically not used at the moment, as they shrink quickly and often provoke the occurrence of secondary caries. The only advantage of such a filling is its low price. However, it should be understood that a cement filling is fragile and unreliable, and it will have to be replaced frequently.

Photopolymer or light-curing fillings are considered the best option for adult patients, as they are characterized by minimal shrinkage and a long service life (5 to 10 years). Special equipment is used to harden the filling – a halogen lamp.
